Trying to Lose Weight? Skip Artificial Sweeteners
In theory, artificial sweeteners provide sweet taste without extra calories and can help people lose weight, but scientific evidence disproves this theory.
A review of 37 studies suggests artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose do not help when it comes to weight management and may contribute to health problems. According to researchers, the potential health effects of sugar substitutes are important because they are regularly consumed, knowingly or unknowingly, by so many people. The review was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Some of the studies included in the review were randomized trials and others were observational studies. Until benefits are proven and questions about possible harm are answered, you may want to avoid foods containing artificial sweeteners as a way lose weight or as a “healthier” substitute for sugar.
