Have Sleep Apnea? Your Brain May Suffer

Sleep-disordered breathing conditions like sleep apnea increase the risk for dementia and other types of age-related cognitive problems, according to a meta-analysis published in JAMA Neurology. More than 4 million adults were involved in the analysis, which found that sleep-disordered breathing is associated with a 26 percent higher risk of having cognitive issues.
Results of this study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, support earlier research identifying sleep apnea in older adults as an significant modifiable risk factor for dementia. Other studies have found no link between sleep apnea, which involves repeat partial or complete breathing cessation while sleeping, and cognitive issues.
