Too Much Vitamin B Can Triple Your Lung Cancer Risk
If you’re a guy and you’re taking big doses of vitamin B to boost your energy and metabolism, you could be putting yourself at greater risk for lung cancer, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing data on more than 77,000 people in the VITamins And Lifestyle (VITAL) cohort study, which was designed to find possible links between vitamins and supplements and cancer risk. For this study, they focused on people who reported taking B6 and B12 supplements, which are often much higher dose than the U.S. recommended dietary allowances for B vitamins.
Participants were between 50 and 76, and researchers adjusted for factors such as smoking history, alcohol consumption, and personal or family history of cancer in determining men’s lung cancer risk related to B vitamins; they found no elevated risk in women.
