Do You Have Prediabetes? Take This Short Quiz to Find Out
On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched a campaign to raise awareness of the risks of prediabetes, a dangerous condition that affects one in three Americans, about 84 million people. Most of these people—about 90 percent—don’t know they have it or aren’t aware of the long-term risks. The campaign encourages viewers to take a one-minute online prediabetes risk test to learn where they stand and how to lower their risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
The campaign, which you can see at DoIHavePrediabetes.org, features videos of puppies, hedgehogs, and baby goats to engage users. It emphasizes the importance of speaking with a health care provider to learn more about prediabetes, and making lifestyle changes like losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and ramping up physical activity to reduce prediabetes risk and prevent type 2 diabetes.
Research conducted through the National Institutes of Health suggests that lifestyle changes can help people with prediabetes reduce their type 2 diabetes risk by as much as 58 percent—and up to 71 percent for people over the age of 60. Diabetes increases the risk for heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss, and other serious health problems.
